General Description:
The Financial Counselor will work closely with the Patient Access Specialists and other departments within ACMH to verify all patient information, personal, insurance and financial, to ensure account balances can be paid in full, in a timely manner.  This includes visiting with patients prior to admission or upon dismissal about the billing, charges, expected insurance payment and estimated patient responsibility. The role primarily involves insurance verification and assisting patients and their families with financial and payment issues. The financial counselor performs an important role in protecting the hospital’s cash flow. This position is unique in that the financial counselor has the opportunity to follow the patient through the entire process from pre-registration through discharge to guarantee the hospital has accurate patient demographics, financial information and/or payment arrangements. The Financial Counselor may be the first and last contact/communication the facility has with our customers, thus excellent customer services skills are a must. This position is responsible for working proactively and in partnership with patients to avoid the engagement of collections agencies, except as the option of last resort. Reviews patient accounts and determines accounts requiring collection action; coordinates correspondence with outside collection agencies. In addition, this role is responsible for assisting the Department Director in facilitating the documentation and management of bad debt. Outbound calling for purposes of collections is required. Establishes and maintains good rapport with all people, both hospital personnel and the community at-large as an essential function. Works in an atmosphere that requires team work and an orientation toward maintaining a high public image of the organization.
Experience/Education Requirements:
Minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent, required. Previous customer services experience required. Previous Business Office duties, financial or insurance experience or education in a healthcare setting, highly desired. Knowledge of medical terminology. Word processing and computer experience desirable. Demonstrated skill in verbal and written communication is required. Ability to adapt to flexible work schedule and frequent interruptions. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Audubon County Memorial Hospital & Clinics is a 17- bed, Critical Access Hospital serving Audubon County and the surrounding areas, with the mission of “Excellence With Quality and Compassion to Those We Serve.”

Our services include emergency services, acute care, skilled nursing services, laboratory, radiology, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and surgical services.
