ACMH staff and providers enjoyed participating in the 2024 Career Day offered by Audubon County Economic Development. Career Day offered local students from around the area an opportunity to meet with staff members of a large variety of organizations from agriculture to healthcare.
ACMH was pleased to have the opportunity to talk to students about the healthcare industry. Students learned about all aspects of running healthcare including finance, information technology, security, nutrition, plant operations and everything in between. ACMH providers and staff took time out of their busy schedules to attend this event.
Dr. Jeffrey Maire, General Surgeon and Dr. Stephanie Vampola talked to students about their professions as a surgeon and a family medicine provider. Dr. Vampola also handed out information to students regarding the importance of protein and the current recommendations for the amount teenagers should have on a daily basis. She also gave them her personal recipe for a protein smoothie.
One of the highlights for students interested in clinical areas was being able to have some hands-on experience with the ACMH Med-Surg/Emergency Department nursing staff. Brittnay Bremser, ARNP/ER/FP and Abby Elmquist, RN gave students the opportunity to practice how to administer an IV into mannequin limbs. Students were guided to use a needle and insert it into a vein on the mannequin limb where they then used fluid (saline) to administer the intravenous therapy.
Nicole (Colee) Hayworth, DNP, CRNA, ARNP who specializes in anesthesia walked students through how to intubate a patient on a practice mannequin.
If students were interested in physical therapy, they were able to meet with Courtney Schlichte, DPT and find out the workings of a typical day as a physical therapist. Caylee Rokke, RN spoke with students interested in nursing and Haillie Bruch discussed her role as ACMH Human Resource Manager. Susan Greving talked to students who were interested in marketing, design and grant writing.
Students left with brochures that reviewed educational requirements for clinical careers and non-clinical careers within the healthcare industry. Students were surprised that there are many careers that only require a high school diploma, an additional certificate, or minimal secondary education.
Audubon County Memorial Hospital and Clinics offers a Student Exploration Visit program to all schools that are interested in bringing students for further discussion. This program began last year with a student visit from Carroll High School. 25 students attended a half day program where they came on-site and met with all ACMH department heads and employees. If your school is interested in setting up a Student Exploration Visit or a job shadow for individual students, please contact Human Resources Manager, Haillie Bruch at 712-563-5258.
