Matter of Balance Class at ACMH

Matter of Balance is a falls prevention program designed to decrease fear of falling for participants.

Katie Glade, PT, DPT, CLT began this program in September 2023 and did both a fall and spring session. Participants found this class very helpful, and Glade began scheduling for the second year. In November of 2024, a new class of participants completed the fall session. This class met every Monday and Wednesday at Community Health Center (CHC) on the first floor Audubon County Memorial Hospital.

Through group discussion, Glade helped participants identify behaviors and actions that may increase the risk for falls in the home. Along with discussion, Glade leads an exercise segment that incorporates flexibility, lower extremity strengthening, and balance exercises.

“My hope is for participants to come away from this program with awareness and understanding, whether it be to incorporate the exercises or to be able to talk to family members and medical providers about their concerns for falls.”

In 2019, Glade went through specific training to lead the class. Initially this class was delayed due to the pandemic. Glade is excited to continue to offer this service on a regular basis and bring this added necessary service to our community.

If you would be interested in learning some adaptations to decrease the risk for falls in the home or surrounding environment, please consider taking part in the Matter of Balance class.

This class will be offered again in Spring 2025 in Exira at the Event Center. The program is designed for up to 12 participants.

The cost of this 8-session program is only $5.00. For more information about the class or participating in the spring session, please reach out to the ACMH Rehab Department at (712) 563-5314.
